About
Minnie Rayner (2 May 1869 – 13 December 1941) was a British stage and film actress born in London, England. A character actress whose career spanned several decades, she became particularly associated with working-class roles, frequently portraying mothers and landladies across both stage and screen.
Rayner's performing career began in the late nineteenth century. In 1889, while in Cape Colony, she took on the role of Edwige, described as a fiery Gipsey girl and sister of the brigand chief, in the comic opera Falka. That production was staged at the Globe Theatre in Johannesburg under the management of Mr. Perkins of The Edgar Perkins Lyric Opera Company. Her stage work in London included the role of Clara in the original 1925 production of Noël Coward's Hay Fever at the Ambassadors Theatre.
A significant portion of Rayner's theatrical career was built through her association with Ivor Novello's productions in the West End. She appeared in his Symphony in Two Flats in 1929, followed by Fresh Fields in 1933, Glamorous Night in 1935, Careless Rapture in 1936, Crest of the Wave in 1937, and The Dancing Years in 1939. In 1930, she brought her role of Mabel in Symphony in Two Flats to Broadway, reprising the performance she had originated in London, and also appeared in the British film version of the same production.
On screen during the 1930s, Rayner portrayed the matriarch of a working-class Fulham family who takes in an exiled Russian prince, played by Ivor Novello, in the 1933 comedy I Lived with You. That same year she played the mother of Gracie Fields's character in This Week of Grace. She also appeared in a recurring capacity as Mrs. Hudson, the landlady, in a series of Sherlock Holmes film adaptations starring Arthur Wontner.
