About
Milton Selzer (October 25, 1918 – October 21, 2006) was an American actor whose work spanned stage, film, and television across five decades. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, he grew up in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where his family relocated during his childhood. He completed his secondary education at Portsmouth High School, went on to study at the University of New Hampshire, and subsequently served in World War II.
Selzer's professional acting career began on Broadway, where he performed from 1949 to 1958. His stage credits include Julius Caesar and Arms and the Man, both from 1950, followed by Once Upon a Tailor in 1954, Tiger at the Gates in 1955, and the drama The Visit. These productions established him as a working stage actor before he transitioned to screen work.
In 1960, Selzer relocated to Hollywood, where he built an extensive career as a character actor in film and television. His film appearances include The Young Savages (1961) with Burt Lancaster, A Big Hand for the Little Lady (1966), In Enemy Country (1968), The Buddy System (1984), and Sid and Nancy (1986). On television, he appeared in an episode of The Asphalt Jungle in 1961 and took on the role of Dr. Nobel in Have Gun Will Travel. He made two appearances on The Twilight Zone, portraying an alien in "Hocus-Pocus and Frisby" and a miserly son-in-law in "The Masks."
Selzer appeared twice on Perry Mason: in 1963 as defendant Dr. Aaron Stuart in "The Case of the Decadent Dean," and in 1964 as murder victim Dr. Max Taylor in "The Case of the Bullied Bowler." Between 1965 and 1967, he made seven guest appearances as Professor Parker on Get Smart, and subsequently appeared on That Girl, The Rat Patrol, Hogan's Heroes, and The Bold Ones: The Protectors. In 1973, he joined the cast of the situation comedy Needles and Pins as the recurring character Julius Singer. His final screen appearance came in the 1995 television film Cagney & Lacey: Together Again.
Selzer died on October 21, 2006, four days before his 88th birthday, from pulmonary complications.
