About

Miles Whitworth Chapin, born December 6, 1954, in New York City, is an American actor, author, and sales consultant whose career has spanned stage, film, and television. He is the son of Schuyler Chapin, an author who served as General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera and later as Commissioner of Cultural Affairs of New York City for eight years under Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, and Betty Chapin, née Steinway, a descendant of Henry E. Steinway, founder of Steinway & Sons.

Chapin made his Broadway debut in Summer Brave in 1975. His screen career began in childhood with a role in Ladybug Ladybug in 1963 and continued through the early 1970s with appearances in Bless the Beasts and Children and To Find a Man, both released by Columbia Pictures. He went on to appear in a range of studio productions, including French Postcards for Paramount Pictures, Hair for United Artists, and Buddy Buddy for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, all released around the turn of the decade. Additional film credits include The Funhouse for Universal Studios, Pandemonium for United Artists, Get Crazy, Howard the Duck for Universal Studios, The People vs. Larry Flynt for Columbia Pictures, and Man on the Moon for Universal Studios. On television, he appeared in a 1988 episode of Murder, She Wrote.

Beyond acting, Chapin has authored two nonfiction books: Tales From The Jungle, published by Crown in 1995, and 88 Keys, published by Clarkson Potter in 1997. He has contributed articles to publications including Saveur, Garden Design, Quest, Cigar Aficionado, and Steinway & Sons Magazine. In 2005, he received a James Beard Award for an article about Lüchow's restaurant published in Saveur. He also holds the film rights to Ain't No Sin to Rock and Roll, a novel by Donald Gallinger.

In more recent years, Chapin has worked as a sales consultant for Steinway & Sons, the piano manufacturing company founded by his maternal ancestor. He has an eldest brother, Henry Chapin, six years his senior, who served as the child narrator on a 1961 recording of Benjamin Britten's The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra conducted by Leonard Bernstein; Henry Chapin is a cellist and music educator based in New York City. Chapin also has twin brothers who are older than him.
