About
Mignon O'Doherty (1890–1961) was an Australian actress whose career spanned British theatre, film, and television. Born in Brisbane, she was the daughter of Dr. Edward O'Doherty and Isabel Maud French. Her family background was distinguished on both sides: her paternal grandfather was Young Irelander Dr. Kevin Izod O'Doherty, and her paternal grandmother was the Irish revolutionary poet Mary Eva Kelly. Her maternal grandfather was General Sir George French, the first commissioner of Canada's Northwest Mounted Police. O'Doherty married actor Tom Nesbitt (1890–1927), the brother of actress Cathleen Nesbitt, and the couple had two children.
O'Doherty made her London stage debut in 1913 and went on to establish herself as a character actress, earning consistent recognition in the profession through listings in Who's Who in the Theatre from at least the 8th edition until her death. Her Broadway career ran from 1922 to 1924 and included three productions: the musical Carnival!, the play Merry Wives of Gotham, and the play Secrets. In 1951 she appeared in Kenneth Horne's And This Was Odd at the Criterion Theatre in London.
Among her most notable stage achievements was her role as Mrs. Boyle in the original cast of Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap, which ran at the Ambassadors Theatre in London from 1952 to 1955. Alongside her stage work, O'Doherty maintained an active screen career spanning nearly three decades. Her film appearances include The Faithful Heart (1932), Channel Crossing (1933), The Good Companions (1933), Autumn Crocus (1934), Neutral Port (1940), Banana Ridge (1942), The Lamp Still Burns (1943), Maytime in Mayfair (1949), White Corridors (1951), The Crowded Day (1954), and Never Let Go (1960).
