About

Michael Praed, born Michael David Prince on 1 April 1960 in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, England, is a British actor and narrator. He adopted the stage name Praed after discovering that the actors' union Equity already had a registered member named Michael Prince; he selected the surname from a telephone book. Praed is a Cornish word meaning "meadow."

Praed is most widely recognized for portraying Robin of Loxley in the British television series Robin of Sherwood, which earned cult status internationally. Among his other prominent screen roles are Prince Michael of Moldavia in the American primetime soap opera Dynasty and Phileas Fogg in the 2000 series The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne. Beginning in 2016, he joined the ITV soap opera Emmerdale as Frank Clayton, the father of the characters Vanessa Woodfield and Tracy Metcalfe. His character died following an explosion at a sweet factory, with his final appearance airing on 1 August 2019. Since 2003, Praed has served as the regular narrator for the BBC history programme Timewatch.

Praed was educated at Eastbourne College before pursuing a career as an actor. His stage work has been a significant part of his career in the British Isles, encompassing both musicals and drama. In 1984, he appeared on Broadway in the musical The Three Musketeers. In July 2009, he took on the role of Captain von Trapp in a national tour revival of The Sound of Music.

Praed was previously married to Karen Landau from 1994 to 2009, and the two have two children together. He is currently married to Josefina Gabrielle.
