Michael Potts is an American actor born on September 21, 1962, in Brooklyn, New York City, who grew up in South Carolina. He trained at the School of Drama at Yale University, a path he pursued after watching a clip of the 1985 stage production of August Wilson's Fences, featuring James Earl Jones and Courtney B. Vance. Before his formal training, Potts developed an early interest in performance through church and local theatrical productions.

His screen work has brought him wide recognition across several prominent projects. On television, Potts portrayed Brother Mouzone in the HBO series The Wire and Detective Gilbough in the first season of True Detective. His film credits include the role of Slow Drag in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.

On stage, Potts originated the role of Mafala Hatimbi in the musical The Book of Mormon. His Broadway career spans from 2005 to 2022 and includes productions such as Jitney, 1984, The Iceman Cometh, and The Prom. He appeared in the 2022 Broadway revival of The Piano Lesson, which The Hollywood Reporter identified as one of the highlights of that production.
