About
Michael Patrick Thornton is an American actor, theater director, and playwright who appeared on Broadway between 2022 and 2025. A native of Jefferson Park, a neighborhood on Chicago's northwest side, he trained at The School at Steppenwolf, The Second City Conservatory, and The Second City Directing Program. At age 24, Thornton suffered two spinal strokes that left him paralyzed, and he has used a wheelchair since that time.
Thornton is the co-founder and artistic director of The Gift Theatre in Chicago. Among his stage credits, he portrayed Iago in Othello at The Gift Theatre and appeared in Actors Theatre of Louisville's 50th anniversary production of Our Town. At Steppenwolf, he performed in Richard III, becoming the first actor to appear onstage while wearing a robotic exoskeleton. His performance in The Gift's world premiere of Andrew Hinderaker's Suicide, Incorporated earned him a Jeff Nomination, and in 2005 he won the Jeff Award for Best Actor in a Solo Performance for his work in The Good Thief at The Gift Theatre.
In addition to performing, Thornton has directed at The Gift, where his credits include the world premiere of David Rabe's Good For Otto, War of the Worlds, and the Chicago premiere of Will Eno's Oh, The Humanity (and other exclamations). As a playwright, his work has been developed through Young Playwrights, Inc. in New York and through Second City in Chicago.
On Broadway, Thornton played Lennox in Sam Gold's revival of Macbeth in 2022 and Dr. Rank in Jamie Lloyd's revival of A Doll's House in 2023. In 2025, he appeared as Lucky in a Jamie Lloyd production of Waiting for Godot, which starred Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter.
Thornton's screen work includes the role of Dr. Gabriel Fife on the ABC drama series Private Practice, as well as appearances in episodes of Elementary, The Exorcist, and The Chicago Code. His film credits include Ron Howard's The Dilemma and the independent feature The View From Tall.
