About
Michael Alden Norell (October 4, 1937 – May 12, 2023) was an American actor, screenwriter, and executive producer. Born in Wallace, Idaho, to Wilma Helen Snook Norell (1905–2001) and James Alden Norell (1908–1989), he grew up in a military family that relocated frequently to follow his father's Army career. His father, who served in Korea and was stationed in Tokyo, Japan, ultimately retired at the rank of Brigadier General. Norell also had a brother, James. After the family returned to the United States, Norell attended Falls Church High School in Virginia, where he participated in school plays. He went on to Washington and Lee University, where he majored in journalism.
Following his graduation, Norell enlisted in the Army and served for five years, attaining the rank of captain. After leaving the military, he worked as a journalist at the Richmond Times-Dispatch before relocating to New York City to pursue acting professionally. He appeared on Broadway in 1965 in the play Cactus Flower. Approximately six months after arriving in New York, he moved to Hollywood, where he secured the role that would define much of his career.
From 1972 to 1978, Norell starred as Captain Henry "Hank" Stanley on the Jack Webb-produced television series Emergency! Beyond performing in the series, he wrote four of its episodes, which launched his parallel career as a screenwriter. He described the writing process as pitching ideas to executive producer Bob Cinader over sessions of one to two hours, then developing approved concepts into a first draft over the course of several weeks, with subsequent rewrites handled by other writers.
After Emergency! concluded, Norell concentrated increasingly on screenwriting, contributing to television series including The Love Boat, Love Boat: The Next Wave, Nash Bridges, and The Magnificent Seven. His television movie credits include Doomsday Rock, Three on a Date, The Covergirl and the Cop, Pals, Barnum, Christmas Comes to Willow Creek, and The Incident, the last of which earned him an Emmy Award nomination. His film credits include The Diamond Fleece, Long Gone, and Against Her Will: An Incident in Baltimore. He also created and served as executive producer on the television series Aloha Paradise. Norell died on May 12, 2023, in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, at the age of 85.
