About
Michael M. Ryan (March 19, 1929 – March 1, 2017) was an American actor born in Wichita, Kansas, whose career spanned stage, film, and television across several decades. A 1952 graduate of Saint Benedict's College in Atchison, Kansas, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science and performed with The Raven Theatre Guild, Ryan subsequently pursued graduate study in political science at Georgetown University before leaving academia to work as an actor. He married his wife, Viki, in 1959, and the couple raised two sons in New York City's East Village, a neighborhood where Ryan had settled in the late 1950s.
Ryan's Broadway career extended from 1960 to 1992 and included appearances in Advise and Consent, Best Friend, and Conversations With My Father. The 1976 production of Best Friend was among his credited stage engagements, and he also accumulated numerous off-Broadway and regional theatre credits throughout his career, frequently taking on classical roles in regional productions.
On television, Ryan became widely recognized for originating the role of John Randolph on the daytime serial Another World, a part he held from November 13, 1964, until the character's death in a fire on March 6, 1979. Earlier in his television career, he had played the lead role in Ben Jerrod, a daytime serial from the early 1960s that was among the first to be broadcast regularly in color. After leaving Another World, Ryan appeared on ABC's The Edge of Night and portrayed Vince Cardello on Another Life, which aired on CBN.
His film work included roles in Tootsie, Body Heat, and Slayground. Ryan died on March 1, 2017, in Missouri at the age of 87.
