About

Michael Learned is an American actress born on April 9, 1939, in Washington, D.C., the eldest daughter of Elizabeth Duane Learned and Bruce Learned, a diplomat. Her maternal grandfather also served in the United States Foreign Service as an attaché at the United States Embassy in Rome. Learned has five younger sisters: Gretl, Susan, Sabra, Dorit, and Philippa. She spent the first decade of her life on a Connecticut farm before relocating to Austria at age eleven, where her father worked for the U.S. Department of State. During that period she attended Arts Educational School, Tring, now known as Tring Park School for the Performing Arts in Hertfordshire, England, where she first encountered theater and committed to pursuing acting as a career. Her parents never explained the origin of her masculine given name; Learned recalled her father saying only that had she been born male, she would have been named Caleb.

Learned is best known to television audiences for her portrayal of Olivia Walton, the wife and mother at the center of the CBS drama series The Waltons, which ran for nine seasons from 1972 to 1981. For the first five seasons she was billed as "Miss Michael Learned" so that viewers would not be confused about her gender; by the sixth season that designation was dropped. She was nominated for six Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for the role, winning three times, in 1973, 1974, and 1976. She was also nominated for four Golden Globe Awards for the same performance. After the seventh season she departed the series; her character's absence was written as Olivia developing tuberculosis and entering a sanatorium in Arizona. She returned briefly in Season 8 and appeared in four of the six subsequent Waltons reunion television films produced during 1982 and the 1990s. During her run on The Waltons, Learned and co-star Will Geer appeared together in the 1974 television film Hurricane.

Following The Waltons, Learned starred as Nurse Mary Benjamin in the CBS hospital drama Nurse, which aired for six episodes in spring 1981 and continued through the 1981–1982 season. Though critically well received, the series lasted only two partial seasons. Learned received two Emmy nominations for the role and won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1982, giving her a total of four Emmy wins in that category, a record she shares with Tyne Daly. Her film work includes a supporting role in the 1980 drama Touched by Love, which marked her big-screen debut, as well as appearances in Power (1986) and Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993). She had starring roles in the 1988 drama series Hothouse and the 1989 sitcom Living Dolls. In 1995 she guest-starred in The Secret World of Alex Mack, and in 2005 she played Judge Helen Turner on the ABC daytime soap operas All My Children and One Life to Live as part of a shared storyline. She appeared in five episodes of Scrubs during its fifth season as Mrs. Wilk, played Shirley Smith on General Hospital in 2010, and in late 2011 filled in for Jeanne Cooper as Katherine Chancellor on The Young and the Restless while Cooper was on extended medical leave. In 2022, Learned returned to television in the Netflix limited series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, playing Catherine Dahmer, Jeffrey Dahmer's grandmother.

Learned's Broadway career spans from 1969 to 2006. Her stage credits include The Best Man, The Loves of Anatol, The Three Sisters, Three Tall Women, and On Golden Pond. In the late 1960s, she and her then-husband Peter Donat performed in various productions with the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. She also appeared in the 2006–2007 national touring production of On Golden Pond. In 2008 she starred as Daisy Werthen in Innovation Theatre Works' production of Driving Miss Daisy opposite Willis Burks II and Dirk Blocker, and reprised the role at the Judson Theatre Company in March 2013 opposite Lance E. Nichols.

Learned has been married four times. Her first marriage, to Canadian-American actor Peter Donat, took place in 1956 when she was seventeen and ended in divorce in 1972 after sixteen years; the couple had three sons together, including actor and business executive Lucas Donat, born in 1962. Her second marriage, to Glen Chadwick, lasted from 1974 to 1976. She married actor-screenwriter William Parker in 1979, and that marriage also ended in divorce. In 1991 she married lawyer John Doherty; the couple resided in California until Doherty's death in 2025. In a 2002 article written for the Daily Word, a publication of the Unity Church, Learned disclosed that at the time she was cast in The Waltons in 1971 she had reached a personal low point and recognized at age thirty-two that she was an alcoholic. She stated that she has been sober since 1977.
