Michael J. Dolan

Michael J. Dolan (1884 – 21 October 1954) was an Irish actor whose stage career spanned several decades and encompassed work in theatre and film. He appeared on Broadway between 1911 and 1937, with credits including Drama at Inish, Juno and the Paycock, The New Gossoon, The Playboy of the Western World, and The Far-off Hills.

A central figure at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, Dolan spent many years as both a performer and an administrator at the institution. In December 1923 he assumed management responsibilities from Lennox Robinson, subsequently serving in the roles of stage manager, general manager, and director. Records of his extensive work at the Abbey are held in the Abbey Theatre Archives.

Among his notable stage associations was a sustained collaboration with Irish playwright Teresa Deevy. He appeared in several of her Abbey Theatre productions, including The King of Spain's Daughter in 1936, Katie Roche, which also toured to the Arts Theatre in Cambridge, England, and Temporal Powers in 1937. He returned to The King of Spain's Daughter in 1939 and to Katie Roche in both 1949 and 1953, the latter production staged at the Queen's Theatre in Dublin while the Abbey Theatre underwent rebuilding and enlargement.

Dolan also worked in film, with screen appearances including Saints and Sinners (1949), Captain Horatio Hornblower (1951), and Scrooge (1951). He died in Dublin on 21 October 1954 at the age of 70.
