About
Michael Emerson is an American actor born on September 7, 1954, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Carol (née Hansen) and Ronald H. Emerson. He grew up in Toledo, Iowa, where he participated in his high school marching band. Emerson graduated from Drake University in Des Moines in 1976 with a major in theater and a minor in art, then studied for a semester at the National Theater Institute at The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center before relocating to New York City. Unable to secure acting work at that time, he supported himself through retail employment and illustration. In 1986, he moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where he performed in local productions at Theater Jacksonville and The Players by the Sea through 1993, and also worked as a director and teacher at Flagler College. He subsequently earned a Master of Fine Arts degree through the Alabama Shakespeare Festival acting program at the University of Alabama.
Emerson's professional stage career gained significant momentum in 1997 when he originated the role of Oscar Wilde in Moises Kaufman's off-Broadway production of Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde at the Minetta Lane Theatre, a run that continued into 1998. That same year he performed opposite Uma Thurman in an off-Broadway production of Le Misanthrope, and he also married actress Carrie Preston, whom he had met during a stage production of Hamlet in Alabama. His Broadway career began in 1999 when he portrayed Willie Oban in the revival of Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. He subsequently co-starred with Kate Burton in both Give Me Your Answer, Do! and Hedda Gabler, the latter of which transferred to Broadway's Ambassador Theatre in 2001. His Broadway work also includes a 2003 production of Tartuffe at the American Airlines Theatre, where he played Cleante.
Beyond the stage, Emerson built a substantial television career. In 2000 and 2001, he appeared in multiple episodes of The Practice as serial killer William Hinks, a role that earned him the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series in September 2001. In 2006, he joined the cast of the ABC drama Lost as Benjamin Linus, initially in a guest capacity before becoming a main cast member in the third season and ultimately a leading character. He received Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for the third, fourth, and fifth seasons of the show, winning the award in 2009 for his work in the fifth season. He was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the Best Supporting Actor category in 2009 for the same role. Emerson went on to star as Harold Finch, a billionaire who partners with a former CIA operative to combat crime in New York City, in the CBS series Person of Interest, which ran from 2011 to 2016. Additional television credits include the role of Zep Hindle in the 2004 horror film Saw and Dr. Leland Townsend in the Paramount+ series Evil, which ran from 2019 to 2024.
Emerson's stage work extends well beyond his Broadway credits. His earlier regional theater roles include Iago in Othello at the University of North Florida in 1986, Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing at Players-By-The-Sea Theater, and multiple productions at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in the mid-1990s, where he played roles including Ferdinand in The Tempest and Duke Vincentio in Measure for Measure. In 2017, he appeared as Guy in the debut production of Will Eno's Wakey, Wakey at Signature Theatre. In 2010, he and Preston performed A.R. Gurney's Love Letters, a 1990 Pulitzer Prize for Drama finalist, at the Charleston Stage as a fundraiser for the theater.
Emerson and Preston have collaborated professionally on multiple occasions. She portrayed the mother of his character in a flashback episode of Lost, and the two appeared together in the films Straight-Jacket in 2004 and Ready? OK! in 2008. Preston also appeared in several episodes of Person of Interest as his character's former fiancée, and in 2024 Emerson appeared alongside her in the series Elsbeth. Emerson supports several charitable organizations connected to the theater community, among them the Actors Fund, Broadway Cares, and Habitat for Humanity.
