About
Michael Ealy, born Michael David Brown on August 3, 1973, in Washington, D.C., is an American actor who grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland. He attended Springbrook High School before enrolling at the University of Maryland in College Park, where he earned a degree in English in 1996. His mother worked for IBM, and his father was in the grocery business.
Ealy began his acting career in the late 1990s with appearances in off-Broadway stage productions. His early film work included roles in Bad Company and Kissing Jessica Stein. His breakout came with the 2002 comedy Barbershop, in which he played reformed felon Ricky Nash, a character he returned to in the 2004 sequel Barbershop 2: Back in Business. Also in 2003, he took on the role of Slap Jack in 2 Fast 2 Furious, the second installment of the Fast and the Furious franchise. He followed those credits with an appearance in Never Die Alone alongside DMX in 2004 and a role in Mariah Carey's music video for "Get Your Number," from her 2005 album The Emancipation of Mimi.
His Broadway involvement spans 2006 to 2009, and he participated in The 24 Hour Plays in 2004. On the television side, 2005 brought him a co-starring role in the Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones-produced television film Their Eyes Were Watching God, which starred Halle Berry, as well as a lead role in the independent film Jellysmoke, directed by Mark Banning. That same year he starred in the Showtime series Sleeper Cell, whose first season aired in December 2005, followed by a second season, Sleeper Cell: American Terror, in December 2006. His performance in the second season earned him a Golden Globe nomination on December 14, 2006, in the category of Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.
In 2008, Ealy appeared in Seven Pounds alongside Will Smith, and in 2009 he participated in The People Speak, a documentary feature drawing on dramatic and musical performances of letters, diaries, and speeches sourced from Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States. He also starred in Beyoncé's music video for "Halo" and portrayed CIA Field Officer Marshall Vogel in the ABC series FlashForward. In 2010, he played attorney Derrick Bond in the second season of The Good Wife and co-starred as Jake Attica in the action film Takers.
The early 2010s brought Ealy a string of prominent film roles. He appeared as Dominic in the 2012 ensemble comedy Think Like a Man and reprised the role in the 2014 sequel Think Like a Man Too. He also played "Papa Joe" in the 2012 film Unconditional and starred opposite Kevin Hart in the 2014 remake of About Last Night. On television, he played Travis Marks in USA Network's Common Law, which premiered on May 11, 2012. In 2013, he was cast as the android Dorian in the Fox sci-fi series Almost Human, set in 2048, opposite Karl Urban; the show ran for one season through 2014.
Subsequent television work included the role of serial killer Theo Noble in season three of The Following on Fox in 2015, the lead role of Eric Warner in the second season of ABC's Secrets and Lies in 2016, and a starring role opposite Gabrielle Union in the fourth, fifth, and final seasons of Being Mary Jane from 2017 to 2019. In 2019, he also starred in the ABC series Stumptown alongside Cobie Smulders, Jake Johnson, and Camryn Manheim, playing a detective. He returned to the role of a detective in 2024 with an appearance in the fourth and final season of Power Book II: Ghost. On the film side, he starred in The Perfect Guy in 2015 and The Intruder in 2019.
In his personal life, Ealy married Afghan-American entrepreneur Khatira Rafiqzada in Los Angeles in October 2012, following four years together. They have a son and a daughter. A supporter of the Washington Commanders, Ealy is a Democrat who publicly endorsed Angela Alsobrooks in Maryland's 2024 Senate race and expressed support for Vice President Kamala Harris and Tim Walz during the 2024 presidential campaign.
