About

Michael Ashley Ball was born on 27 June 1962 in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, to a Welsh mother and an English father. His father, Tony, had originally aspired to act but instead trained as an Austin apprentice at the Longbridge plant, eventually rising to head of global sales at British Leyland and receiving an MBE for services to industry. Ball's maternal grandfather worked as a coal miner, and his maternal grandmother, who had a musical ear, took pride in his early singing achievements before dying suddenly of a heart attack approximately one week before his stage debut. Ball has a brother, Kevin, four years older, and a sister, Katherine, nearly a decade younger. The family relocated to Dartmoor when Ball was three. At eleven, he enrolled at Plymouth College, an independent boarding school, though the academic and sporting environment left him unhappy. His interest in theatre grew during school holidays, when his father took him to productions including a Royal Shakespeare Company staging of King Lear at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, which made a strong impression on him at around age fourteen. He subsequently joined a youth theatre and went on to study drama at the Guildford School of Acting, graduating in 1984. Ball has never taken formal singing lessons, instead developing his voice as a boy by singing along to recordings by artists including Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson, and Frank Sinatra.

Following graduation, Ball's first role was in Godspell at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, after which he worked in repertory theatre in Basingstoke. His first major break came when he was selected from approximately 600 applicants at an open audition for a starring role in The Pirates of Penzance at Manchester Opera House. Cameron Mackintosh then cast him as Marius Pontmercy in the original London production of Les Misérables, where he made his West End debut in 1985. During that run, Ball contracted glandular fever and took seven weeks off to recover from the associated tonsillitis and post-viral fatigue. On returning, he experienced on-stage panic attacks accompanied by anxiety, rapid heartbeat, sweating, and vision problems, and he eventually left the production. A subsequent invitation from Thames Television to sing during the live Miss England contest helped him recognize that his anxiety was not visible to audiences, which eased his concerns about performing.

Mackintosh later cast Ball as Raoul de Chagny in the second casting of The Phantom of the Opera in London's West End in 1987, a role Mackintosh felt would suit him without placing him under excessive pressure. Ball went on to originate the role of Alex Dillingham in Aspects of Love, performing it both in the West End and on Broadway, where his Broadway career began in 1990. The song "Love Changes Everything" from that production reached number two on the UK Singles Chart in 1989. His other West End credits during this period include Giorgio Bachetti in Stephen Sondheim's Passion in 1996 and Caractacus Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in 2002. In 1995, he reprised the role of Marius in Les Misérables: The Dream Cast in Concert, the production's tenth anniversary concert. In 2004, Ball performed the role of Jean Valjean in a concert staging of Les Misérables for the Queen at Windsor Castle. That same year he co-starred with Petula Clark in a production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard at the Cork Opera House, later broadcast by the BBC, and presented a solo show, Alone Together, as part of the Singular Sensations season at the Haymarket.

Ball's Broadway credits, spanning 1990 to 2005, include Aspects of Love and The Woman in White. He joined The Woman in White in 2005 as Count Fosco, replacing Michael Crawford with ten days' notice after Crawford left the role due to poor health. The production subsequently transferred to Broadway in November 2005, where Ball reprised the role before being forced to withdraw due to a viral infection reportedly linked to the physical demands of the fat suit required for the character, which raised his body temperature significantly during performances. In September 2005, Ball also made his New York City Opera debut as Reginald Bunthorne in Gilbert and Sullivan's Patience. He spent the first quarter of 2006 on complete vocal rest following the illness that ended his Broadway run.

Ball has twice received the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical. The first came in 2008 for his portrayal of Edna Turnblad in Hairspray, and the second in 2013 for the title role in a revival of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. He reprised Edna Turnblad in the 2021 revival of Hairspray. In 2018, he played Anatoly Sergievsky in the West End revival of Chess, and in 2019 and 2020 he returned to Les Misérables as Inspector Javert, a role he reprised in 2024 for Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular World Tour. In 2023, Ball appeared in a revival of Aspects of Love, this time in the role of Sir George Dillingham. Beyond the stage, Ball and Captain Tom Moore reached number one on the UK Singles Chart on 24 April 2020 with a cover of "You'll Never Walk Alone," which sold 82,000 combined chart copies and became the fastest-selling single of 2020. Ball has released multiple chart-topping albums, with Coming Home To You representing his fourth number one album in the UK. In 1992, he represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest, finishing second with the song "One Step Out of Time." Ball was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 2015 Birthday Honours for his services to musical theatre. Originally from Stratford-on-Avon, England, he remains one of the most prominent figures in British musical theatre.
