About
Mia Barron is an American actress born in Toronto and raised in Brookline, Massachusetts. The daughter of psychologist James Barron and writer Susan Barron, she has two brothers from her father's second marriage. Barron pursued her undergraduate training at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where she earned a BFA, and subsequently completed an MFA through Tisch's graduate acting program.
Early in her career, Barron worked extensively in regional theater before establishing herself in New York. Her regional credits include engagements at The Long Wharf, The Guthrie, The Old Globe, the Huntington Theatre, New York Stage and Film, the Berkshire Theatre Festival, the Williamstown Theatre Festival, Westport Playhouse, the Actors Theatre of Louisville's Humana Festival, and The Acting Company. After settling in New York, she became a consistent presence in the off-Broadway world, frequently appearing in premieres of new plays.
Barron's Broadway career spans 2001 to 2007 and includes three productions: QED and two parts of Tom Stoppard's Tony Award-winning The Coast of Utopia — Part 1, Voyage, and Part 2, Shipwreck — in which she appeared alongside Billy Crudup and Ethan Hawke. Off Broadway, she appeared in the New York premieres of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Bruce Norris's The Pain and the Itch at Playwrights Horizons and Domesticated at Lincoln Center Theater, the latter featuring Jeff Goldblum and Laurie Metcalf. She also participated in the Chekhov Project at Lake Lucille, playing Elena opposite Bill Irwin's Vanya and Natasha opposite Michael Chernus's Andrey.
Barron has received multiple honors for her off-Broadway work. She earned a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Featured Performer in a Play for the Lincoln Center production of The Coast Starlight, and an Obie Award for Outstanding Performance for her role in Hurricane Diane at New York Theatre Workshop. Her work in the ensemble of Sarah Delappe's The Wolves, produced off-Broadway, brought her both a second Obie Award for Outstanding Ensemble and a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble. The New York Times named The Wolves one of the best productions of its year, and Forbes described it as a milestone for women in entertainment.
With director Lars Jan, her partner, Barron co-created a theatrical adaptation of Joan Didion's The White Album, which premiered at BAM's Harvey Theatre as part of the Next Wave Festival and played to sold-out houses. The two share a child, Esme.
Barron's television work includes a recurring role on Get Shorty alongside Chris O'Dowd and Ray Romano, a recurring role on Law & Order True Crime opposite Edie Falco, and the recurring role of Katrina Griffin on NCIS. She is also known as the voice of Molotov and Sally Impossible on the Cartoon Network animated series The Venture Bros. Her film work includes Half Empty Half Full, which received a Best Ensemble nomination from the New York Film Awards. She is additionally an Audie Awards finalist in the category of Female Narration for Crosstalk. Barron subsequently relocated to Los Angeles, where she has continued working in television and independent film while maintaining her involvement in New York theater.
