About
Merle Tottenham (22 January 1901 – 18 July 1958) was a British actress who worked across stage and film throughout her career. Born in the early twentieth century, she built a professional life that spanned both sides of the Atlantic, with credits in London's West End, on Broadway, and in Hollywood productions.
Tottenham made her Broadway appearance in 1930, performing in the play Nine Till Six. Her West End work included a role in the original London production of Noël Coward's Cavalcade, which opened in 1931. When that production was adapted for Hollywood, Tottenham traveled to California to reprise her stage role as Annie, a servant, in the 1933 film version.
Her film career continued with notable supporting roles, frequently cast as domestic servants. In the 1937 film Night Must Fall, she appeared as Dora the maid alongside Robert Montgomery and Rosalind Russell. She returned to Coward material in 1944, playing Edie the maid in the film adaptation of his play This Happy Breed.
Tottenham died on 18 July 1958, having established a career that moved between the stage traditions of Britain and the commercial film industry of Hollywood.
