About

Merle Louise, born Merle Louise Letowt on April 15, 1934, in Manhattan, New York, was an American actress whose Broadway career spanned five decades, from 1959 to 2009. Raised in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, she began working as a mechanical calculator for the Lehigh Valley Railroad after high school while simultaneously taking classes in New York City. In 1963, she married actor and lighting director Peter Simon; the couple had three children before divorcing. Louise died on January 11, 2025, at a nursing home in Lake Katrine, New York, at the age of 90.

Louise made her Broadway debut in 1959 in Gypsy, billed at the time under her birth name Merle Letowt. She originated the role of Thelma in the production's original cast before advancing to the lead role of Dainty June, which she performed for a substantial portion of the Broadway run and subsequently on the first national tour. She returned to Broadway in 1970 as Susan in Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's Company, a production documented in part through a behind-the-scenes film about the recording of its original cast album, in which Louise appears.

Her most celebrated stage work came in 1979 with Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, where she played the Beggar Woman. The role earned her the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical. Because Louise was not part of the national tour that was subsequently videotaped, her performance in the role was not preserved in that recording. In 1983, she originated the role of Mme. Dindon in Jerry Herman's La Cage aux Folles, and in 1987 she returned to Sondheim with Into the Woods, taking on three distinct parts in a single production: Cinderella's Mother, Granny, and the voice of the Giantess. She reprised those roles in a 1997 Broadway revival of the same show, and her performance in the televised production of Into the Woods also brought the work to on-camera audiences.

Louise continued expanding her Broadway credits in 1993 with Kiss of the Spider Woman, in which she played Molina's Mother. She performed the same role in productions in London's West End, Toronto, and on the national tour. Her final Broadway credit came in 2008 with Billy Elliot: The Musical, where she served as understudy for the role of Grandma and performed in the ensemble. She also appeared in Bernadette Peters: A Special Concert for Broadway Barks Because Broadway Cares.

Beyond Broadway, Louise originated the role of Cecily MacIntosh in Charlotte Sweet Off-Broadway in 1982. Her regional theater work encompassed classical repertoire by Shakespeare, Chekhov, Molière, Pinter, Ibsen, and Shaw. Later stage appearances included Frau Schneider in Cabaret, Mme. Armfeldt in A Little Night Music, Lady Henslowe in Elizabeth Rex with Nicu's Spoon Theater Company, Jeanette in The Full Monty in Massachusetts, and a role in Luke Yankee's The Jesus Hickey in New York in July 2007. Her on-camera work included guest appearances on Law & Order. Louise's extensive connections across Broadway productions inspired the cast of the musical title of show to devise a game called Six Degrees of Merle Louise, modeled on Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon but using Broadway musicals as the linking mechanism between performers.
