About
Melora Diane Hardin was born on June 29, 1967, in Houston, Texas, to actor Jerry Hardin and Diane Hardin, a retired actress and acting manager and coach. She is the sister of former Flock CEO Shawn Hardin. The family relocated to San Francisco when Hardin was five years old, and she later attended Patrick Henry Junior High School and Ulysses S. Grant High School in the San Fernando Valley. She went on to graduate from Sarah Lawrence College.
Hardin began her professional acting career in childhood, starring in the television series Thunder from 1977 to 1978. Early television appearances included a 1978 episode of The Love Boat, two episodes of the medical drama Quincy, M.E. in 1979 and 1982, and two 1981 episodes of Little House on the Prairie as Belinda Stevens, a role she reprised in the 1983 television movie Little House: Look Back to Yesterday as Michele Pierson. She appeared opposite C. Thomas Howell in the 1986 film Soul Man as Whitney Dunbar and co-starred in the 1990 dance film Lambada as Sandy. Hardin was originally cast as Jennifer Parker in Back to the Future alongside Eric Stoltz, who played Marty McFly. When Stoltz was replaced by Michael J. Fox, Hardin was also recast — she was considered too tall to appear alongside Fox — and Claudia Wells took the role. She starred as Baby in the short-lived 1988 television series Dirty Dancing, based on the 1987 film, and appeared in two 1992 episodes of Quantum Leap as Abigail in the two-part episode "Trilogy." She also played Ross's love interest in the season one Friends episode "The One with the Stoned Guy" and appeared in the 1997 film Absolute Power as Christy Sullivan.
Hardin's profile grew considerably in the 2000s through a series of prominent television roles. She played the recurring character Trudy Monk, the title character's deceased wife, on the USA Network series Monk from 2004 to 2009. Beginning in 2005, she portrayed Jan Levinson, a former corporate manager and the love interest of Michael Scott, on NBC's The Office, a role she continued through 2013. In 2005 she also portrayed Linda Evans in the television movie Dynasty: The Making of a Guilty Pleasure. Her film work during this period included Thank You for Smoking in 2006 and Hannah Montana: The Movie in 2009, in which she played the love interest of Billy Ray Cyrus's character. Also in 2009, she appeared as Principal Jane Masterson in the comedy film 17 Again. She played Fantine in the Hollywood Bowl's concert production of Les Misérables in the summer of 2008. From 2014 to 2019, Hardin played Tammy Cashman on Amazon Prime Video's Transparent, earning a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for the role. She starred as magazine editor-in-chief Jacqueline Carlyle on the Freeform comedy-drama The Bold Type from 2017 to 2021.
Hardin's Broadway career spans from 1996 to 2024. She made her Broadway debut on December 29, 2008, playing Roxie Hart in the revival of Chicago, remaining with the production through February 12, 2009. In 2024, she originated the role of Francine Blake in the Broadway play McNeal, written by Ayad Akhtar and starring Robert Downey Jr. The production opened on September 30, 2024, and ran for 53 performances as a limited engagement.
Outside of acting, Hardin sang the United States national anthem at the Anaheim Ducks' season-opening hockey game on October 13, 2010, and performed it again for the Phoenix Coyotes three days later. In September 2021, she was announced as a competitor on season 30 of Dancing with the Stars, partnered with professional dancer Artem Chigvintsev. The pair advanced to the semifinals before finishing in sixth place. Hardin has been married to actor Gildart Jackson since 1997, and they have two daughters together.
