About
Melinda Ruth Dillon, born Melinda Ruth Clardy on October 13, 1939, in Hope, Arkansas, was an American actress whose career spanned stage, film, and television across more than four decades. Raised in Cullman, Alabama, she spent four years in Germany while her father was stationed at a military base before returning to the United States. She attended Hyde Park High School and subsequently trained at the Goodman School of Drama at the Art Institute of Chicago, which is now part of DePaul University. During her time at Goodman, she was associated with a Second City troupe that included Barbara Harris and Alan Arkin. Dillon died on January 9, 2023, at the age of 83.
Before her professional stage career, Dillon appeared in a 1961 student production of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya at the Goodman Theatre, playing Sonya under director Alan Schneider. Her first major professional role came the following year when she was cast as Honey in the original 1962 Broadway production of Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, a credit that also marked her Broadway debut. The role earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play as well as a Theatre World Award in 1963. At the time of her death, she was the last surviving member of the original cast. Her Broadway work continued through 1971 and included Ovid's Metamorphoses, Paul Sills' Story Theatre, A Way of Life, and The Shock of Recognition.
Dillon's screen career began with a small role in the 1959 short film The Cry of Jazz, and her first feature film appearance came in The April Fools in 1969. That same year she guest-starred in an episode of the television series Bonanza. Her film profile rose considerably with the 1976 Woody Guthrie biopic Bound for Glory, in which she co-starred with David Carradine, earning her a Golden Globe nomination in the Best Female Acting Debut category for her portrayal of Memphis Sue. The following year she received her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as a mother whose child is taken by aliens in Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Also in 1977, she appeared in the Paul Newman comedy Slap Shot and made an uncredited cameo in The Muppet Movie. She received a second Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress four years later for her performance as a suicidal teacher in Absence of Malice, again opposite Newman.
Dillon became widely recognized for her role as Mrs. Parker, the mother of Ralphie and Randy, in Bob Clark's 1983 film A Christmas Story, which was based on Jean Shepherd's writings about young Ralphie Parker, played by Peter Billingsley, and his pursuit of a Red Ryder BB gun. She was not involved in the 2022 sequel A Christmas Story Christmas, with Julie Hagerty replacing her in the role; according to Billingsley, Dillon had retired from acting at that point but expressed full support for the project. In 1987 she co-starred with John Lithgow in the comedy Harry and the Hendersons. Her subsequent film credits included Captain America (1990), The Prince of Tides (1991), To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995), How to Make an American Quilt (1995), and Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia (1999), in which she played Rose Gator, wife of a terminally ill television game-show host portrayed by Philip Baker Hall. Her performance in Magnolia earned her a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. Later credits included a 2005 guest appearance on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, three episodes of the TNT drama Heartland, and the 2007 film Reign Over Me.
In her personal life, Dillon married actor Richard Libertini in 1963; the couple had a son and divorced in 1978. She served as a staffer on Democrat Eugene McCarthy's 1968 presidential campaign. Following her death in January 2023, she was cremated and her ashes were given to her family.
