About
Melina Mercouri appeared in numerous films directed by Jules Dassin, whom she married in 1966. That year, Greece's rightist government revoked her citizenship, citing "anti-national activities" — her refusal to support fascism. Jules Dassin faced accusations in 1970 of sponsoring a plot to overthrow the junta; though the charges were eventually dropped, the couple lived in exile in Paris until the regime fell in 1974. Returning to Greece, Melina Mercouri entered politics and won a seat in the Greek Parliament in 1977, becoming the first woman to hold the senior cabinet post of Minister of Culture. Her autobiography, "I Was Born Greek," was published in 1971.
