About
Megan Mullally was born on November 12, 1958, in Los Angeles, California, the only child of Martha (née Palmer) and Carter Mullally Jr., an actor who held a contract with Paramount Pictures during the 1950s. At age six, Mullally relocated with her family to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, her father's hometown, and is of English, Irish, and Scandinavian ancestry. Also beginning at age six, she trained in ballet, eventually performing with the Oklahoma City Ballet during her high school years and studying at the School of American Ballet in New York City. After graduating from Casady School in Oklahoma City, she enrolled at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where she pursued English literature and art history. During her sophomore year she began acting in theater in downtown Chicago, and by her junior year she was performing in eight shows per week. She ultimately left Northwestern without completing her degree in order to pursue a full-time acting career.
Among Mullally's earliest on-screen appearances was a McDonald's commercial that also featured John Goodman. Her television series debut came in 1986 on The Ellen Burstyn Show, after which she accumulated guest roles on numerous sitcoms including Seinfeld, Frasier, Wings, Herman's Head, Ned and Stacey, Mad About You, Caroline in the City, 3rd Rock from the Sun, and Just Shoot Me. In 1989, she tested for the role of Elaine Benes on Seinfeld, a part that ultimately went to Julia Louis-Dreyfus. She also played a central character in a season-five episode of Murder, She Wrote titled "Coal Miner's Slaughter."
Mullally's career shifted significantly in 1998 when she was cast as Karen Walker, Grace Adler's abrasive, pill-popping assistant, in the NBC sitcom Will & Grace, which ran from 1998 to 2006 and was later revived for three additional seasons from 2017 to 2020. The role earned her eight Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, with wins in 2000 and 2006. She also received seven consecutive Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series, winning in 2001, 2002, and 2003, making her the first of only two actresses to win that award three consecutive years. Together with cast members Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, and Sean Hayes, she shared the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series in 2001. Additionally, she received four Golden Globe Award nominations, including consecutive nominations from 2000 through 2003 for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film. In 2005, she was honored with the Women in Film Lucy Award for her contributions to the portrayal of women on television.
Following the conclusion of Will & Grace's original run, Mullally hosted her own talk show, The Megan Mullally Show, from 2006 to 2007. She has also hosted Saturday Night Live, guest-hosted the Late Show with David Letterman, hosted the 2006 TV Land Awards, and appeared as a featured performer twice on the Tony Awards. In 2005, after seeing comedian Bill Hader perform with his Second City class in Los Angeles, Mullally brought him to the attention of Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels.
Mullally's subsequent television work included a starring role as Rosemary in the ABC sitcom In the Motherhood in 2009, opposite Cheryl Hines and Jessica St. Clair, which was canceled after five of its seven produced episodes aired. She co-starred as Lydia in the 2010 Starz ensemble series Party Down and played Chief on the Adult Swim series Childrens Hospital. Beginning in 2011, she had a recurring role as Dana Hartz on the ABC sitcom Happy Endings, and in 2012 she joined the second season of Breaking In. She appeared seven times as Tammy Swanson on NBC's Parks and Recreation, playing the second ex-wife of Ron Swanson, a character portrayed by her real-life husband, Nick Offerman. Mullally joined the cast of Bob's Burgers in its first season as Aunt Gayle and reprised the role in subsequent episodes. She also made multiple appearances on 30 Rock as an adoption caseworker introduced in the show's third-season premiere. In 2024, Mullally and Offerman starred together in season four of the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy, playing Jean and Gene, respectively. Her film credits include Smashed (2012), The Kings of Summer (2013), and Why Him? (2016).
Mullally's Broadway career spans from 1994 to 2014. She made her Broadway debut playing Marty in the 1994 revival of Grease, then appeared as Rosemary in the 1995 revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying opposite Matthew Broderick. In 2007, she starred as Elizabeth in Mel Brooks' original Broadway musical Young Frankenstein, listed in the database as Frankenstein. She can be heard on the cast recordings of all three productions. In 2014, Mullally appeared in It's Only a Play. Outside of Broadway, she starred in You Never Know at the Pasadena Playhouse in 1996, appeared as Pamela in Chuck Mee's The Berlin Circle in 2000, for which she received both the LA Weekly Theatre Award and the Backstage West Garland Award, and starred as Beverly in Adam Bock's The Receptionist at the Odyssey Theatre, earning the 2010 Backstage West Garland Award for Best Performance by an Actress for that role.
