Meg Wynn Owen

Meg Wynn Owen, born Margaret Shuttleworth on 8 November 1939 in Lancaster, was a British actress whose career spanned stage, film, and television. She died in June 2022 at the age of 82. At the age of 13, she relocated to Hoyland to live with her mother's friend Ruth Wynn Owen, a drama coach and actor, and Ruth's husband Ian Danby. She graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1956 and subsequently adopted Meg Wynn Owen as her professional name. Her parents were Margaret, née Brinnand, and Miles Shuttleworth.

Owen is perhaps best remembered for her television role as Hazel Bellamy in the British drama series Upstairs, Downstairs. Her screen work extended to a range of film productions, including The Duellists, A Woman of Substance, Gosford Park, Love Actually, Pride and Prejudice, and Irina Palm.

On stage, Owen established a Broadway presence between 1975 and 1982, appearing in Travesties, A Meeting by the River, and Good. She was originally from Wales.

In her personal life, Owen was married to Australian artist William Wright from 1967 to 1987. In her later years she suffered from dementia. Following her death, it was reported in November 2022 that Brian Malam, a friend to whom she had granted power of attorney, had pleaded guilty to fraud after stealing £65,000 from her bank accounts and was sentenced to 32 months in prison.
