About
May Emory, born Minnie L. Snyder on November 11, 1880, in Austin, Illinois, was an American actress whose name also appeared in print as Mae Emory. She died on October 15, 1948, and is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California, beside her husband, Harry Gribbon.
Before establishing herself on Broadway, Emory built her career in vaudeville, performing alongside her husband on the Keith, Orpheum, and Pantages circuits. She also worked with the Morton Opera Company, appearing in a production of The Tenderfoot at the National Theatre in Boston in 1914.
Her Broadway career spanned from 1907 to 1913 and encompassed a range of musical productions. She made her Broadway debut with the Ziegfeld Follies of 1907 and returned to the Follies the following year in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1908. Her additional Broadway credits included A Parisian Model in 1908, The Hoyden in 1908, The Merry Whirl in 1910, A Skylark in 1910, The Rose Maid in 1912, and Her Little Highness in 1913.
Emory and Gribbon subsequently joined the L-KO Kompany and transitioned into film work, making comedy pictures together. Between 1915 and 1919, she appeared in 28 films. Her work in Teddy at the Throttle was later included in the 1960 compilation When Comedy Was King. Harry Gribbon was the brother of actor Eddie Gribbon.
