About

Maxwell Caulfield, born Maxwell P.J. Newby on 23 November 1959 in Belper, Derbyshire, England, is a British and American actor whose career has spanned stage, film, and television across multiple decades. The elder son of Peter Newby and Oriole Rosalind Findlater, he has a younger brother, Marcus, who is also an actor. By 1965 his parents had separated, and his mother resumed her maiden name. He relocated to the United States at age 18 after obtaining a green card, and became a naturalized American citizen on 5 September 1991. Since 1980 he has been married to actress Juliet Mills, daughter of actor Sir John Mills and writer Mary Hayley Bell, making him a brother-in-law of actress Hayley Mills and Jonathan Mills.

Caulfield's path to professional acting began in London, where he danced in a nude revue set to music by Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd at the Windmill Theatre, work that earned him an Equity card. His New York City stage debut came in 1978 in the gay farce Hot Rock Hotel, followed in 1979 by the lead role in Class Enemy, for which he received a Theatre World Award. His Broadway debut came in J.B. Priestley's An Inspector Calls, opposite Siân Phillips, and his Broadway credits between 1979 and 1996 also include Once a Catholic, Sleuth, and Chicago. In 2007 he played Billy Flynn in the long-running London West End production of Chicago before resuming the role for the Broadway production that November. He performed opposite Stacy Keach in a Los Angeles production of Sleuth in 1988, and appeared alongside Jessica Tandy and Elizabeth Wilson in Salonika at the Public Theater in New York. His Off-Broadway work includes the title role in Joe Orton's Entertaining Mr. Sloane in 1981, a 2006 production of Tryst opposite Amelia Campbell, and a 2011 production of Cactus Flower. He also appeared in Joe Orton's Loot and Charles Busch's Our Leading Lady, the latter with Kate Mulgrew, at regional venues. In his earlier years he was an active member of the Mirror Repertory Company, performing in productions including Paradise Lost, Rain, Inheritors, and The Hasty Heart. On 14 April 2024, he appeared in the 10th Anniversary Concert of Cool Rider at the London Palladium, performing the song "Reproduction" in the role of Mr. Stuart. In 2015, Caulfield toured Australia alongside his wife Juliet Mills and sister-in-law Hayley Mills in the comedy Legends! by Pulitzer Prize winner James Kirkwood.

Internationally, Caulfield is perhaps best known for his starring role as Miles Colby in the American television series Dynasty and its spinoff The Colbys during the 1980s. His other television appearances include Murder, She Wrote, Beverly Hills, 90210, Spider-Man, Casualty, Emmerdale, NCIS, and a guest role on Modern Family as Claire's ex-boyfriend and college professor. His film career includes the starring role in Grease 2 (1982), as well as appearances in Electric Dreams (1984), The Boys Next Door (1985), The Supernaturals (1986), Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat (1989), Waxwork 2 (1992), Gettysburg (1993), Empire Records (1995), The Real Blonde (1997), The Man Who Knew Too Little (1997), A Prince for Christmas (2015), and The Merry Gentlemen (2024) for Netflix. At age seven, he appeared in the 1967 film Accident, billed as Maxwell Findlater. He voiced James Bond in the video game James Bond 007: Nightfire (2002) and voiced the character Brom in the Eragon video game in 2006.
