Born Maxine Shlivek on June 28, 1918, in New Jersey, Maxine Stuart is a life member of The Actors Studio. She married her second husband, Frank Maxwell, in 1949; they had one daughter, Chris Ann Maxwell. Her third marriage, to David Shaw, followed in 1974.
Her film work includes "Days of Wine and Roses," "Private Benjamin," "Fun with Dick and Jane," "Like Father Like Son," "Winning," "Kitten with a Whip," and "The Prisoner of Second Avenue." On television she appeared in "The Edge of Night," "The Twilight Zone," "Perry Mason," "Dr. Kildare," "Chicago Hope," and "The Wonder Years."
Helene Hanff made Maxine Stuart a central figure in two nonfiction books, "84, Charing Cross Road" and "Underfoot in Show Business," chronicling their shared struggle to make it on Broadway during the 1930s and '40s.
