About

Maureen Moore is an American actress born on August 12, 1951, in Wallingford, Connecticut. She studied theater at Carnegie Mellon University and gained early professional experience at the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival before establishing herself as a fixture of the Broadway stage from 1972 through 2006.

Moore made her Broadway debut in the 1974 revival of Gypsy, playing Dainty June, a role she held through 1975. She returned to the production decades later, serving as standby for Bernadette Peters in the role of Rose during the 2003–04 run. That capacity for stepping into major starring roles became a defining feature of her career. She served as standby for Christine Ebersole in the role of Edie/Edith in Grey Gardens during its 2006–07 run and covered Elaine Paige as Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard, a production in which she appeared from 1994 through 1997.

Her Broadway credits span a wide range of productions across more than three decades. These include I Love My Wife from 1977 to 1979, Amadeus from 1980 to 1983, Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up? in 1982, Song and Dance from 1985 to 1986, Jerome Robbins' Broadway from 1989 to 1990, Falsettos from 1992 to 1993, Cabaret from 1998 to 2004, The Threepenny Opera in 2006, and Grey Gardens in 2006–07. She also served as dance captain on The Moony Shapiro Songbook in 1981 and appeared in Les Misérables during its long Broadway run from 1987 to 2003.

Off Broadway, Moore appeared in Unsung Cole in 1977, First Lady Suite in 1993, and performed the role of Countess Charlotte Malcolm in A Little Night Music at the New York City Opera in 1990. Her work in national tours included Falsettos in 1993, in which she played Trina. Regional credits include Oklahoma!, Shenandoah, and George M! with the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera in 1976, and Al Jolson Tonight! at The Muny in St. Louis in August 1980. She also voiced the Witch in the musical Into the Woods.

Moore's screen work includes the role of Elizabeth in the 1978 film The Goodbye Girl and an appearance in the 1984 film The Pope of Greenwich Village.
