About
Maureen Delany, born Maureen Barry O'Delany on 1 December 1888 in Kilkenny, Ireland, was an Irish stage and screen actress and singer whose Broadway career spanned from 1921 to 1959. Her father, Barry Delany, died when she was three months old. She was educated in Galway and initially pursued a path toward opera training, possessing a notable singing voice. Her theatrical career began instead when Lennox Robinson accepted her into the Abbey Theatre School, and she made her stage debut in Edward McNulty's comedy The Lord Mayor in 1914.
Delany built her reputation as a comic actress and singer, becoming closely associated with specific roles in the Irish dramatic repertoire. She was particularly identified with the character Maisie Madigan in Seán O'Casey's Juno and the Paycock and Bessie Burgess in O'Casey's The Plough and the Stars, as well as the Widow Quin in J.M. Synge's The Playboy of the Western World. Both Juno and the Paycock and The Playboy of the Western World were among her Broadway credits, alongside The New Gossoon, Drama at Inish, and God and Kate Murphy.
Delany also appeared in several works by Irish playwright Teresa Deevy staged at the Abbey Theatre, including A Disciple in 1931, Temporal Powers in 1932, Katie Roche in 1937, a second production of Temporal Powers in 1937, and In Search of Valour in 1947. Katie Roche toured to Broadway's Ambassador Theatre and to the Arts Theatre in Cambridge, England, both in 1937.
Her Broadway work earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play in 1959, for her role in God and Kate Murphy. Also billed professionally as Maureen Delaney, she remained active primarily in Britain throughout her career. She married Peter O'Neill around 1947; he predeceased her and the couple had no children. Delany died on 27 March 1961 in her room at a London hotel.
