About
Maude Odell (November 10, 1870 – February 27, 1937), also known as Maude O'Dell, Tillie Doremus, and Maude Odell Doremus, was an American stage actress born in Beaufort, South Carolina. Her Broadway career extended from 1898 to 1933, spanning nearly four decades of work in both plays and musicals.
An early milestone in Odell's career came with her appearance in The Prisoner of Zenda, which ran for 400 nights in New York. She went on to accumulate a wide range of Broadway credits, including the musical The Girl from Brazil, the plays Nobody Home, Maria Rosa, and The Debutante, as well as Child of Manhattan. Additional stage work included Little Boy Blue, The Student Prince, Show Boat, and Tobacco Road.
Odell died on February 27, 1937, from a heart attack suffered in her dressing room shortly before a scheduled performance of Tobacco Road. She was buried at the cemetery of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Beaufort, South Carolina, the city of her birth.
