About
Kate Maud Milton (1859–1945) was an English actress whose career spanned stage and screen across more than four decades. Born in Gravesend, Kent, she was the daughter of a Merchant Marine sea captain and received her education at home. Originally apprenticed as a dancing-mistress, she changed course and was coached for the stage by actor John Ryder. Her professional debut took place on 15 April 1876 at The Royal Aquarium theatre.
Milton built her early reputation performing in both Shakespearean classics and the contemporary plays of the Victorian era. Her connection to the American stage began in 1880, when she worked with Edwin Booth during his Shakespeare engagements in England, and she subsequently debuted and toured the United States in 1882–1883. Over the course of her career she shared the stage with a notable range of performers, among them Wilson Barrett, Helena Modjeska, Frank Benson, John Martin-Harvey, Oscar Asche, H. B. Irving, Marie Tempest, and Herbert Beerbohm Tree.
Her Broadway career extended from 1901 to 1921 and included appearances in Peg O' My Heart, Sacred and Profane Love, Humpty Dumpty, Her Country, and The Old Country, among other productions.
Milton entered film in 1913, appearing in the short format typical of the period. Over the following eight years she worked in both mediums simultaneously, accumulating screen credits that included The Old Wood Carver (1913), Damaged Goods (1914), Kill or Cure (1914), The Old Flute Player (1914), Janet of the Chorus (1915), The Criminal (1915), and The Ruling Power (1915). Her final film appearance was in A Message from Mars (1921). She died on 19 November 1945 at Ryde on the Isle of Wight.
