Matthew Maher is an American actor born in 1971 or 1972, whose work spans theater, film, and television.
Maher has built a substantial stage career across prominent regional and Off-Broadway institutions, including The Public Theater, the New York Shakespeare Festival, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, and Actors Theater of Louisville. His theater credits include Red-Handed Otter at Cherry Lane Theater, Uncle Vanya at Soho Repertory Theatre, Golden Child by David Henry Hwang at Signature Theatre Company, and Tales From My Parents Divorce with The Civilians. At The Public Theater, he appeared in Richard III in 2004, playing Christopher and the Second Murderer. Later stage work included Acaste in The School for Lies at Classic Stage Company in 2011, Reverend Baines in Golden Child at Signature Theatre in 2012, and Matt in Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play at Playwrights Horizons in 2013. That same year, he originated the role of Sam in Annie Baker's The Flick, which premiered at Playwrights Horizons and went on to win the 2014 Pulitzer Prize. Maher reprised the role at Barrow Street Theatre in 2015 and again in 2016 when the production transferred to the Dorfman Theatre in London. He also appeared as Roderigo in Othello at New York Theatre Workshop in 2016.
Maher made his Broadway debut in 2019, playing Oswald in King Lear at the Cort Theatre.
His film work dates to the late 1990s, with appearances in Bringing Out the Dead and Dogma, both released in 1999. Subsequent film credits include Vulgar (2000), The Third Wheel (2002), Jersey Girl (2004), Gone Baby Gone (2007), The Killer Inside Me, I'm Still Here, and It's Kind of a Funny Story (all 2010), Captain Marvel (2019), Funny Pages (2022), and Air (2023). He also provided work on the video game Grand Theft Auto V in 2013 and appeared in the television series Our Flag Means Death from 2022 to 2023.
