About

Matt Mulhern is an American actor, writer, director, and historian born on July 21, 1960, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended Pascack Hills High School in Montvale, New Jersey, and went on to study acting under William Esper at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, earning a BFA in Acting in 1982.

Mulhern made his Broadway debut in 1985, originating the role of Joseph Wykowski in Neil Simon's Biloxi Blues, which won the Tony Award for Best Play. The production launched a career that extended across theater, film, and television. His New York stage work beyond Broadway included The One-Armed Man at Ensemble Studio Theater, Surviving Grace at the Union Square Theater, The Night Hank Williams Died at the Orpheum Theater, and Wasted at the WPA Theater. Regional credits encompassed The Glass Menagerie at the La Jolla Playhouse, The Habitation of Dragons at Pittsburgh Public Theater, a national tour of Death of a Salesman in which he played Biff opposite Hal Holbrook, and The Orphans Home Cycle at Hartford Stage.

His film appearances include One Crazy Summer, Extreme Prejudice, the film adaptation of Biloxi Blues, Junior, Infinity, and The Sunchaser, among others. On television, Mulhern was a series regular on the CBS comedy Major Dad from 1989 through 1993, portraying Lieutenant Eugene "Gene" Holowachuk. He also appeared on Third Watch, Law and Order, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, The Education of Max Bickford, Ed, Fringe, CSI, and Blue Bloods, and held a recurring role on FX's Rescue Me as Lieutenant John Stackhouse.

In addition to performing, Mulhern wrote and directed two films. Walking to the Waterline, in which he also acted, and Duane Hopwood, starring David Schwimmer, the latter of which film critic Roger Ebert named one of the best films of 2005. He also authored a novel, Crossing Open Spaces, published by CreateSpace in March 2009.

After a career spanning approximately 35 years, Mulhern stepped away from acting, writing, and directing in 2015. He subsequently earned a master's degree in history from City College-CUNY in 2019 and is currently pursuing a PhD in history at Fordham University. He lives north of New York City with his wife and their two sons, including one named Jack.
