About
Matt Mattox, born August 18, 1921, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, trained as an apprentice under jazz dance pioneer Jack Cole. He flew as a fighter pilot with the Army Air Forces during World War II. In 1975, he founded JazzArt, a concert jazz dance company based in England. An influential contemporary jazz dance teacher, he eventually settled in Perpignan, France.
His film credits include "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," "The Girl Rush," "The Glory Brigade," "Hot Blood," and "Pepe." On television, he appeared in "The United States Steel Hour," "Pinocchio," "The Patti Page Oldsmobile Show," "The Bell Telephone Hour," and "Arias and Arabesques."
Matt Mattox developed a distinctive jazz dance style that drew on his training across multiple dance traditions, known as "freestyle dance."
