About
Matt Leisy is a British-American actor working in theatre, television, and film. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he grew up in Surrey, England, and attended the American Boychoir School before completing high school at The Pembroke Hill School in Kansas City, Missouri. He later graduated from Northwestern University.
Leisy's stage career spans Broadway, Off-Broadway, and extensive regional and international work. His Broadway credit is A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, the Tony Award-winning musical, in which he appeared in 2015. He also performed in the Broadway First National Tour of the same production. On the international stage, he played Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny in the World Tour of The Phantom of the Opera. His Off-Broadway work includes the role of Matt in The Fantasticks, a performance that earned him a Great Performance of 2011 honor. He also appeared in The Light in the Piazza with New York City Center Encores! and in the Lucille Lortel Award-winning production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at the Barrow Street Theatre, where he played Beadle Bamford and served as standby for the roles of Anthony Hope and Tobias Ragg.
His regional theatre credits are extensive. He portrayed Mr. Bingley in Pride and Prejudice at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Algernon in The Importance of Being Earnest at Arizona Theatre Company, and Ken in John Logan's Red at the Clarence Brown Theatre. Additional credits include Richard Hannay in The 39 Steps, Younger Brother in Ragtime, Leonard Vole in Witness for the Prosecution at Bristol Riverside Theatre, Scripps in Alan Bennett's The History Boys at both The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis and the Arden Theatre Company, Young Scrooge in A Christmas Carol at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, and the regional premiere of The Inheritance.
Leisy received a Barrymore Award nomination for Excellence in Theater for his work in The History Boys at the Arden Theatre. He also received an honorable mention for Outstanding Supporting Actor for his role in Ghostlight at the New York Musical Theatre Festival.
His television appearances include The Blacklist on NBC, Live from Lincoln Center on PBS, and Impossible Escapes on Curiosity Stream. Film credits include The Good Shepherd, The Friend, Super Happy Fun Clown, Life Interrupted, Tell, Man From the Dying Planet, and Shooting Script. In November 2021, Leisy made his solo concert debut at Helzberg Hall of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, and in November 2023 he opened for Gladys Knight at the same venue. He currently resides in New York City.
