About
Matt Doyle (born Matthew Finnen Doyle, May 13, 1987) is an American actor and singer-songwriter whose Broadway career spans from 2006 to 2021. He grew up in Weston, Connecticut, before relocating to Northern California during his adolescence, where he graduated from Redwood High School in Larkspur, California. He subsequently trained for a year at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
Doyle made his Broadway debut in 2007 in the original production of Spring Awakening, initially serving as a standby before being promoted to the role of Hanschen following the departure of original cast member Jonathan B. Wright. He remained with the production until it closed in January 2009. That same year, he appeared in the Broadway revival of Bye Bye Birdie, portraying Hugo Peabody. In 2011, he took on the role of Billy Naracott, also understudying the role of Albert, in Lincoln Center Theater's production of War Horse. He then stepped into the starring role of Elder Price in The Book of Mormon, replacing Nic Rouleau and performing in the production from November 2012 to January 2014.
Between Broadway engagements, Doyle built a substantial body of work in off-Broadway and regional theatre. He starred as Anthony Hope in the Barrow Street Theatre's 2017 production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, appeared in West Side Story at the Paper Mill Playhouse, and performed in Ryan Scott Oliver's Jasper in Deadland at both the West End Theatre in New York and the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle. Additional regional credits include the musical Giant in Dallas and Brooklynite at the Vineyard Theatre. He also appeared in the 2017 stage adaptation of A Clockwork Orange at New World Stages and is featured on a cast recording of Bare: A Pop Opera as Peter.
Doyle returned to Broadway in 2021 in the gender-swapped production of Company, taking on the role of Jamie, a part originated by Jonathan Bailey in the West End production. He received both the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical in 2022 for that performance. In 2022, he also returned to the off-Broadway stage, playing Seymour Krelborn in a revival of Little Shop of Horrors. In September 2023, he starred as Frank Sinatra in the world premiere of Sinatra: The Musical at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre in Birmingham, England.
On screen, Doyle portrayed Jonathan, the boyfriend of Eric van der Woodsen, on the CW series Gossip Girl, and starred in Alan Brown's film adaptation Private Romeo. He also had a small singing role in the 2009 film Once More with Feeling.
As a singer-songwriter, Doyle released two EPs, Daylight in 2011 and Constant in 2012, followed by his debut full-length album, Uncontrolled, in 2016. His writing partner is musical theatre composer Will Van Dyke. Doyle also co-created a web comic titled Dents in 2017 with childhood friend Beth Behrs, and he regularly performs solo shows at New York venues including 54 Below and Joe's Pub. He lives in Jersey City, New Jersey.
