About

Matt Caplan is an American actor, musician, and voice artist whose Broadway career spanned from 1996 to 2017. Born in New York and raised in Virginia Beach, Virginia, he studied theater at the Governor's School for the Arts, a magnet school in Virginia, before returning to New York City to pursue a professional acting career.

Caplan's Broadway credits include Rent, in which he played Mark Cohen, as well as the revival of South Pacific, High Fidelity, School of Rock, and Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. He originated the role of Tunny in the stage adaptation of Green Day's American Idiot, which premiered at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in Berkeley, California in September 2009 and concluded its run there on November 15, 2009. When the production transferred to Broadway, the role of Tunny was taken over by Stark Sands.

The production officially opened on June 14, 2011, following numerous delays and changes. He departed the show on January 29, 2012, with Matthew Wilkas stepping in as his replacement. After returning to cover the Peter Parker/Spider-Man role multiple times during 2012, Caplan rejoined the production officially on November 13, 2012, replacing Matthew James Thomas as the alternate for the lead role. He performed twice weekly in place of lead actor Reeve Carney until December 2, when Jake Epstein took over the part on December 4.

Beyond the stage, Caplan has appeared in film and television. His film credits include Across the Universe, in which he played a Dorm Buddy, and Painting Abby Long. On television, he appeared as Terry Walters in New Amsterdam in 2008, as Marine Private Paul "McCartney" Patterson in NCIS in 2012, and as Johnny in Taken Away in 2014. He has also performed English-language voice dubbing for anime at NYAV Post, with roles in productions including Shaman King, Kurokami: The Animation, Midori Days, and Huntik: Secrets & Seekers, among others.

As a recording artist, Caplan has released two studio albums, a self-titled debut in 2001 and Overtones in 2004, along with the single Odd Evensong in 2009.
