About
Mary Servoss (June 2, 1888 – November 20, 1968) was an American actress whose career spanned both the Broadway stage and film. Born in Chicago, Illinois, to Carlos A. Servoss and Mary (née Baker), she built her professional life primarily around the theater, with a Broadway presence extending from 1906 to 1949.
Servoss began performing in 1905 with a stock company, taking a small role in a production of Lorna Doone. Her stage career grew to encompass a wide range of productions, including Dance Night, Swan Song, the drama Suspect, and Medea. In 1922, she appeared alongside David Warfield, playing Portia to his Shylock in The Merchant of Venice. Later in the decade, she was part of the 1929 production of Street Scene, followed by the 1931 play Counsellor-at-Law, which starred Paul Muni. She also took on the role of Queen Gertrude in Hamlet on two separate occasions, performing opposite Raymond Massey in 1931 and Leslie Howard in 1936.
Already an established stage veteran, Servoss made her film debut in 1940 and went on to appear in more than 20 films before her final screen credit in 1949. Outside of her professional work, she pursued the hobby of restoring old farmhouses.
Servoss died in Los Angeles on November 20, 1968. Her papers, which include correspondence, photographs, books, scrapbooks, and printed materials documenting her life and career, are preserved in the Charles E. Young Research Library at UCLA.
