About

Mary Jerrold was an English actress born on 4 December 1877 in London, England, who died on 3 March 1955. She built a career spanning decades across both the London stage and Broadway, with her New York appearances running from 1907 to 1928. Her Broadway credits include the play The Sacred Flame and Under the Greenwood Tree.

Jerrold began her London stage career in 1896, making her debut as Prudence Dering in Mary Pennington Spinster. Over the following decades she took on a wide range of roles in the West End. In 1922 she appeared in a stage adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, playing Elizabeth Bennet at the age of 44, making her one of the oldest actresses to have been cast in that role. Her husband, actor Hubert Harben, appeared alongside her in the same production, cast as Mr. Collins.

Her later stage work continued to be varied. She appeared in Molly Keane's Ducks and Drakes in 1941, and the following year she joined the original West End production of Arsenic and Old Lace, playing Martha Brewster for three and a half years. In 1946 she starred in Frederick Lonsdale's West End melodrama But for the Grace of God, and in 1951 she took the lead role in Kenneth Horne's comedy And This Was Odd at the Criterion Theatre. Her final noted stage appearance came in 1953 in N.C. Hunter's A Day by the Sea.

Jerrold was married to actor Hubert Harben. The couple had two children: actress Joan Harben and celebrity chef Philip Harben.
