Born May 23, 1932, in Bronxville, New York, Mary Fickett trained at Wheaton College and the Neighborhood Playhouse under Sanford Meisner before joining the Actors Studio, where she studied with Elia Kazan. She was a regular on "All My Children" from 1970 to 1996, with occasional episodes thereafter, and won the 1973 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement by Individuals in Daytime Drama for that role. Her film work included "Man on Fire" and "Kathy O'," while television credits ranged across "Bonanza," "Daniel Boone," "The Untouchables," "Naked City," "The Edge of Night," "The Defenders," "General Electric Theater," "Studio One in Hollywood," "Lancer," "Kraft Theatre," "The United States Steel Hour," and "The Doctors and the Nurses." Her father, Homer Fickett, directed the radio series "Theater Guild on the Air." She was married to James Congdon, Jay Leonard Scheer, and Allen Fristoe.
