About
Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, born November 17, 1958, in Lombard, Illinois, is an American actress and singer whose career has spanned Broadway, film, and television. The daughter of Frank A. Mastrantonio and Mary Dominica (née Pagone), both of Italian descent, she grew up in Oak Park, Illinois. Her father operated a bronze foundry. She studied drama at the University of Illinois and worked summers at the Opryland USA theme park to help finance her education.
Mastrantonio's Broadway career began in 1980 when she joined the revival of West Side Story as an understudy. She went on to appear in a range of productions over more than three decades, including Copperfield, The Human Comedy, and Oh, Brother!, as well as The Winslow Boy, The Marriage of Figaro, and the 2002 revival of Man of La Mancha, in which she played Aldonza/Dulcinea opposite Brian Stokes Mitchell. Her performance in Man of La Mancha earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical in 2003, and her New York stage work also brought her two Drama Desk Award nominations. She additionally appeared in New York Shakespeare Festival productions of Henry V, Measure for Measure, and Twelfth Night.
Her screen career gained momentum with Brian De Palma's Scarface (1983), in which she played Gina, the sister of Al Pacino's Tony Montana. Her next major film role, as Carmen in The Color of Money (1986) alongside Paul Newman and Tom Cruise, earned her nominations for both the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and a Golden Globe. Subsequent film credits include Slam Dance (1987) with Tom Hulce, The January Man (1989) with Kevin Kline, and James Cameron's science fiction film The Abyss (1989) with Ed Harris. She portrayed Maid Marian in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) opposite Kevin Costner, appeared as the attorney daughter of Gene Hackman's character in Class Action, and co-starred in both Consenting Adults and White Sands in 1992, the latter alongside Willem Dafoe and Mickey Rourke. She later played a fishing boat captain in The Perfect Storm (2000).
Beyond New York, Mastrantonio performed on the London stage in Grand Hotel at the Donmar Warehouse and starred as Beatrice in A View from the Bridge at the Duke of York's Theatre in 2008, alongside Ken Stott and Allan Corduner. She also appeared as Helena Alving in Ghosts at the Seattle Repertory Theater. In 1984, she took part in a benefit performance of A Christmas Carol at Symphony Space in New York, sharing the stage with Helen Hayes, Raul Julia, and Len Cariou, among others.
Since 1990, Mastrantonio has been married to director Pat O'Connor, who directed The January Man. The couple have two sons and lived in England for approximately twenty years before returning to the United States in the 2010s.
