About
Marvin E. Laird (October 26, 1939 – December 2, 2024) was an American composer, conductor, and Broadway performer born in Kansas City, Kansas. Over the course of his career, he worked across multiple disciplines in musical theater and film, establishing himself as a notable figure in both performance and behind-the-scenes creative work.
Laird is perhaps best recognized for his contributions to the 1969 film adaptation of Hello, Dolly!, for which he wrote the dance arrangements. He also co-created the all-female musical Ruthless! alongside Joel Paley, his longtime creative partner and later husband. The two collaborated closely throughout their careers.
On the performance side, Laird appeared on Broadway in 1999 in Annie Get Your Gun. His stage work complemented a broader career that spanned composition, conducting, and theatrical creation.
Laird died on December 2, 2024, of natural causes in Bridgeport, Connecticut, at the age of 85. He was survived by Paley, who died approximately six weeks later on January 11, 2025.
