About
Born June 2, 1944, in Manhattan to Lilly and Max Hamlisch, Marvin Frederick Hamlisch began studying at Juilliard as a child. He later enrolled at Queens College while simultaneously working as a rehearsal pianist on Broadway. It was in that capacity on "Funny Girl" that he first met Barbra Streisand; their subsequent collaboration, "The Way We Were," reached No. 1 on the pop charts. His wife, producer Terre Blair, whom he married in 1989, survived him.
Film and television credits span a wide range, including "The Informant!," "Candles on Bay Street," "To Life!" "America Celebrates Israel's 50th," "123 Count with Me," "The Mirror Has Two Faces," "Open Season," "Seasons of the Heart," "Frankie and Johnny," "Switched at Birth," "Missing Pieces," "A Streetcar Named Desire," "Sophie's Choice," "I Ought to Be in Pictures," "Ordinary People," "The Spy Who Loved Me," "Hot L Baltimore," "Take the Money and Run," "The April Fools," and "The Swimmer."
An EGOT winner, Marvin Frederick Hamlisch collected Emmy Awards for Outstanding Music Direction for "Timeless: Live in Concert" in 2001, Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for "AFI's 100 Years 100 Movies Special" in 1999, and both Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics and Outstanding Music Direction for "The Concert" in 1995. His Grammy Awards include the Hall of Fame Award for "A Chorus Line" in 2007, plus three 1975 wins: Best New Artist, Song of the Year for "The Way We Were," and Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for "The Way We Were." At the 1974 Oscars, he took home three statuettes — Best Original Song and Best Original Music Score for "The Way We Were," and Best Original Song Score for "The Sting." He received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for "A Chorus Line" in 1976 and was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 2008.
Marvin Frederick Hamlisch served as pop conductor for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and others. On August 8, 2012, the marquees of the Broadway theaters were dimmed in his honor.
