About

Mark Metcalf is an American actor born on March 11, 1946, in Findlay, Ohio. His father, Charles Mayo Metcalf, worked as a civil engineer. The family relocated to Webster Groves, a suburb of St. Louis, before moving again in 1959 to New Jersey, where Metcalf attended Westfield High School and graduated in 1964. He enrolled in the engineering program at the University of Michigan, where his first stage experience came through a production of Shakespeare's Henry VI. His first professional acting engagement followed in 1971 with the Milwaukee Repertory Theater. In the early 1970s, Metcalf settled in New York City, working in both classical and modern theater productions, including an appearance on Broadway in 1976 in Streamers.

Metcalf's screen career took shape with his casting as ROTC cadet officer Douglas C. Neidermeyer in the 1978 comedy film Animal House, a role that established his screen persona as an antagonistic authority figure. He revisited that archetype in 1984 when he appeared in two music videos for the heavy metal band Twisted Sister — "We're Not Gonna Take It," in which he played an authoritarian father, and "I Wanna Rock," in which he portrayed an authoritarian high school teacher. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he accumulated guest appearances on television series including Miami Vice, Walker, Texas Ranger, and Party of Five, along with recurring roles on Hill Street Blues, Teen Angel, Star Trek: Voyager, Ally McBeal, and JAG. He relocated to Hollywood in 1993.

Among his most recognized television work is his portrayal of a self-absorbed conductor on the seventh season of Seinfeld. The character, who insisted on being addressed as "Maestro," appeared first in the episode titled "The Maestro" and again in a later episode that season titled "The Doll." From 1997 to 2002, Metcalf played the vampire known as The Master across multiple episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off series Angel. In 2009, he appeared as Mayor Johnson in the Mad Men episode "Souvenir," part of the series' third season.

In 2000, Metcalf left Los Angeles and moved to Bayside, Wisconsin, with his then-wife, Elizabeth "Libby" Wick, and their son, Julius. He and Wick opened a restaurant called Libby Montana in nearby Mequon, Wisconsin. Metcalf filed for divorce in 2003, and Wick became the sole owner of the restaurant in 2006; the establishment closed permanently in late 2024. During his years in Wisconsin, Metcalf acted in several productions for First Stage Children's Theater in Milwaukee. He also developed a Student Screenwriting Competition in conjunction with the Milwaukee Film Festival, through which he produced a short film each year based on a screenplay written by a high school student enrolled in the program. He additionally contributed film writing to the online publication OnMilwaukee.

In 2013, Metcalf moved to Missoula, Montana, to be closer to Julius, who was studying at the University of Montana. There he played Scrooge in a production of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol presented by the University of Montana School of Theatre and Dance. In 2019, he appeared as Sheriff Roy in Tate Bunker's film The Field, alongside Barry Bostwick and Veronica Cartwright. After relocating to Columbus, Ohio, Metcalf became the subject of a documentary short titled Character, directed by Vera Brunner-Sung, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020. Metcalf has one son, Julius, and has been a longtime advocate for Alzheimer's research and awareness.
