About

Cuthbert Mark Dignam was born on 20 March 1909 in London, England, the son of a salesman in the steel industry. He grew up in Sheffield and received his education at the Jesuit College, where he took part in numerous Shakespearean productions. Dignam died on 29 September 1989.

Dignam built his early professional foundation touring Britain and America with Ben Greet's Shakespeare company. His career ultimately spanned stage, radio, film, and television, with Broadway appearances stretching from 1938 to 1969. His verified Broadway credits include the plays Hamlet and Oscar Wilde.

Beyond the stage, Dignam demonstrated considerable range across other media. In radio, he appeared in Louis MacNeice's The Dark Tower in 1946. In the late 1970s he took a role in the television thriller The XYY Man. His connection to popular culture extends to an unexpected source: alongside Philip Guard and John Bryning, Dignam can be heard on the fade-out of the Beatles' song "I Am the Walrus," which incorporates a 1967 BBC radio broadcast of King Lear in which Dignam played the Earl of Gloucester.

Dignam was married three times and divorced twice. His brother Basil was also a well-known character actor, and his sister-in-law was the actress Mona Washbourne. From 1967 until his death, Dignam resided in Dollis Hill, in north-west London.
