About
Marjorie Eyre (1897 – 3 December 1987) was an English singer and actress born and raised in Derby, England, who trained at the Royal College of Music. She built her career primarily through the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire, spending more than two decades with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company before extending her work to international stages, including Broadway.
Eyre joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1924, beginning in chorus roles and taking the small part of Giulia in The Gondoliers. By 1925, performing with one of the company's touring companies, she had advanced to her first leading soprano role, Yum-Yum in The Mikado, alongside smaller assignments including Lady Ella in Patience and Celia in Iolanthe. The following year brought further advancement: she took on the title role in Patience, as well as the leading soprano parts of Rose Maybud in Ruddigore and Gianetta in The Gondoliers. In 1926 she also married fellow company member Leslie Rands, and the two would frequently be paired on stage throughout their careers. Returning to the main company in 1927, Eyre was by 1928 sharing principal soprano roles including Patience, Phyllis, Yum-Yum, Rose Maybud, and Gianetta.
In 1929, Rupert D'Oyly Carte redirected Eyre's career by assigning her mezzo-soprano roles, sending her to study with a voice teacher to lower her range. She became the company's principal soubrette, taking on Cousin Hebe in H.M.S. Pinafore, Edith in The Pirates of Penzance, Saphir in Patience, the title role in Iolanthe, Pitti-Sing in The Mikado, Mad Margaret in Ruddigore, and Tessa in The Gondoliers. While Nellie Briercliffe covered the last four of those roles from October 1929 to May 1930, Eyre performed Constance in The Sorcerer during that period. By 1930 she had resumed her principal soubrette assignments, with adjustments that included switching to Lady Angela in Patience and adding Melissa in Princess Ida and Phoebe Meryll in The Yeomen of the Guard. She held these mezzo-soprano roles for the next fifteen seasons, departing the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1946.
Among her recordings with D'Oyly Carte, Eyre captured Lady Saphir in Patience in 1930 and Pitti-Sing in The Mikado in 1936. That same year, during the company's American tour, Eugene Burr praised her performance as Tessa in The Gondoliers in The Billboard. She was recognized for her economy of gesture, comic timing, and ability to convey emotion.
Eyre's Broadway appearances spanned 1934 to 1939 and encompassed several productions drawn from the Gilbert and Sullivan canon, including The Yeomen of the Guard, Patience, The Gondoliers, Ruddigore, and The Hot Mikado. These credits reflected the same repertoire she had mastered over her years with D'Oyly Carte.
Following her departure from the company, Eyre and Rands relocated to Sussex in 1947. In 1949 they traveled to Australia, joining former D'Oyly Carte colleagues Richard Walker, Helen Roberts, John Dean, and Anna Bethell for a Gilbert and Sullivan tour of Australia and New Zealand organized by Frank Tait under the J. C. Williamson Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company. The engagement continued until 1951. In 1952, Rands and Eyre appeared together in a charity production of Merrie England at Priory Park in Chichester, playing the Earl of Essex and Jill-All-Alone respectively during a week-long run.
In her later years Eyre remained connected to the Gilbert and Sullivan world, serving as a vice-president of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society in London until her death. She died in Brighton on 3 December 1987 at the age of 90.
