About
Mariska Aldrich, born Mariska Horvath on March 27, 1881, in Boston, Massachusetts, was an American dramatic soprano and actress. She married J. Frank Aldrich on April 18, 1901, and pursued vocal training under Alfred Giraudet from 1906 to 1909, as well as under George Henschel. During her time in Europe, her voice transitioned from contralto to dramatic soprano.
Aldrich made her operatic debut at the Manhattan Opera House in 1908, taking the role of the Page in Les Huguenots. She continued her association with that company through 1913. During the 1910–1911 season at the Metropolitan Opera, she performed a range of roles including Azucena in Il trovatore, Fricka in Das Rheingold, Lola in Cavalleria Rusticana, Venus in Tannhäuser, and Naoia in Frederick Converse's Iolan, Or, the Pipe of Desire. In 1914, she sang the role of Brünnhilde at Bayreuth.
Her stage work extended to Broadway, where she appeared in 1924 in The Miracle. She also had a film credit, playing a character named Hilda in the 1941 MGM suspense-comedy Whistling in the Dark, directed by S. Sylvan Simon and starring Red Skelton, Ann Rutherford, and Virginia Grey.
In 1908, artist Henry Salem Hubbell made Aldrich the subject of a portrait titled Caprice. The painting was displayed at New York's National Arts Club and became the most publicized submission to the 1908 Paris Salon. Caprice is currently held in the permanent collection of the Mulvane Art Museum in Topeka, Kansas, as part of its Endangered Art series.
Aldrich died on September 28, 1965. She was cremated at Los Angeles County Crematory on October 6, 1965, and her ashes are interred at Forest Lawn in Hollywood Hills.
