About
Marion Barney (1879–1968) was an American character actress whose career spanned stage, silent film, and radio over several decades. Born in San Francisco, she studied at the University of California, Berkeley, while simultaneously developing her craft through local theatrical societies. Her professional stage work began in the early years of the twentieth century with touring productions, which eventually led to supporting roles on Broadway.
Between 1908 and 1913, Barney served as leading lady of the Orpheum Players at Philadelphia's Chestnut Street Theatre. Her Broadway career extended from 1904 to 1933 and included appearances in productions such as Philip Goes Forth, The Right to Dream, The Butter and Egg Man, Aloma of the South Seas, and Hamilton, among others. In 1919 she stepped away from the stage to work in silent films, completing ten pictures before returning to Broadway the following year. Her film credits from that period include Heart of Gold, Mandarin's Gold, The Spirit of Lafayette, Love and the Woman, Dust of Desire, His Father's Wife, The Woman of Lies, The Poison Pen, and The Steel King, all from 1919, as well as the earlier titles A Hero Among Men and In the Toils, both from 1913, and Matrimonial Web in 1921.
During the 1930s Barney shifted her focus to radio, beginning with the title role in Tish, an NBC Blue summer program that aired in 1932. She became closely associated with the radio work of writer Elaine Sterne Carrington, appearing as a series regular on Rosemary, Pepper Young's Family, and When a Girl Marries, where she was frequently cast in matronly roles. She also appeared in Carrington's serial Marriage for Two. Beyond Carrington's programs, Barney's radio credits included The Chase Twins, Gangbusters, Home of the Brave, Neighbors, Pages of Romance, Peables Takes Charge, Special Investigator, and We the People. She was also regarded for her work in summer stock, and was noted for possessing a sharp memory that served her well in performance.
