About
Mario Alcalde (September 6, 1926 – April 22, 1971) was an American actor born in Key West, Florida, the son of Armando Alcalde. He trained at the American Theatre Wing and built a career spanning stage, film, and television across roughly two decades.
Alcalde's stage work began in the early 1950s with an Off-Broadway production of Bullfight, and he went on to appear on Broadway between 1950 and 1965. His Broadway credits included The Flowering Peach, Diamond Orchid, Captain Brassbound's Conversion, and Lovers.
His screen career began in 1954 with the television drama series Robert Montgomery Presents. Two years later he appeared in the 1956 film Crowded Paradise, starring Hume Cronyn and Nancy Kelly, in which he played the role of Juan Figueroa. Alcalde accumulated a substantial list of television guest appearances over the following years, including roles on Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Daniel Boone, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, 77 Sunset Strip, Dr. Kildare, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Man with a Camera, The Virginian, and The Wild Wild West. He also appeared in the episode "The Monster" from Have Gun Will Travel, playing Carlos in a segment that first aired on January 14, 1960. Among his recurring television roles, he played Yellow Hawk in the western series The Texan and therapist Chuck Atwell in the soap opera Peyton Place. Beyond acting, Alcalde earned two screenwriting credits, one for the medical drama series The Nurses and one for the crime drama series The Fugitive.
His film appearances included All the Young Men (1960), Dead Ringer (1964), and Hail, Hero! (1969). His final screen credit was the 1971 film Clay Pigeon. Alcalde died in April 1971 in Glendale, California, at the age of 44, from complications of a ruptured appendix. He is buried at Grand View Cemetery in Glendale, California.
