About
Marin Ireland is an American actress born on August 30, 1979, in Camarillo, California. She trained at The Hartt School, the performing-arts conservatory at the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Connecticut, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Her work spans theatre, film, and television, with particular recognition for her stage performances in New York. The New York Times has described Ireland as "one of the great drama queens of the New York stage."
Ireland began her theatre career off-Broadway, making her debut in Adam Rapp's Nocturne at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2001, a production that had also appeared at the Hasty Pudding Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in October 2000 as part of the American Repertory Theatre New Stages presentation. Her subsequent off-Broadway credits include Caryl Churchill's Far Away at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2002, the title role in Willy Holtzman's Sabina at Primary Stages in 2005, and the 2008 stage adaptation of The Beebo Brinker Chronicles, based on Ann Bannon's series of lesbian pulp fiction novels.
Ireland made her Broadway debut in Neil LaBute's Reasons to Be Pretty in 2009, a role that earned her both a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play and the Theatre World Award. Later that same year, she appeared in After Miss Julie, a Roundabout Theatre Company presentation of a Donmar Warehouse production staged at the American Airlines Theatre from September through December 2009. In 2010, Ireland appeared in the New Group revival of A Lie of the Mind, and she later starred in The Big Knife on Broadway, completing a run of Broadway appearances that extended from 2009 to 2013.
Her film career began with roles in Rachel Getting Married and The Understudy, both released in 2008. In 2012, she played the female lead in Matt Ross's debut film 28 Hotel Rooms. Her performance as Ellen Doyle in Glass Chin (2014) brought her a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female. Additional film credits include The Family Fang (2015), Hell or High Water (2016), Piercing (2018), The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018), The Irishman (2019), The Dark and the Wicked (2020), and Eileen (2023). Her leading role in The Dark and the Wicked earned her recognition from a number of film festivals, and she has received two Independent Spirit Award nominations across her film career.
On television, Ireland built a substantial presence through recurring and series-regular roles. She appeared in guest roles across the Law and Order franchise between 2003 and 2008 before transitioning to more prominent parts. She played Julia Bowman in the Amazon Studios series Sneaky Pete from 2015 to 2019, Sissy Cooper in Netflix's The Umbrella Academy from 2020 to 2022, and Nora Brady in Hulu's post-apocalyptic drama Y: The Last Man in 2021.
Beyond acting, Ireland has worked extensively as an audiobook narrator, recording titles by authors including Fredrik Backman, Anthony Doerr, and Amor Towles. In 2020, she received the Audie Award for Best Female Narrator for her recording of Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson. Ireland has also been an advocate for stronger industry protocols around misconduct, speaking publicly about her experiences and lobbying theatre unions to establish clearer procedures for handling such situations.
