About

Marin Hinkle is an American actress born on March 23, 1966, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to American parents. Her mother, Margaret R. Hinkle, serves as a judge on the Superior Court of Massachusetts, and her father, Rodney Hinkle, worked as a college dean and teacher. Her parents met while serving in the Peace Corps. The family relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, when Hinkle was four months old, and her brother Mark was born two years later. Hinkle has Italian ancestry. She attended Newton South High School before going on to Brown University and then New York University's Graduate Acting Program at the Tisch School of the Arts, where she graduated in 1991.

Hinkle's stage career includes notable work in both regional theater and on Broadway. In early 1994, she played Juliet opposite Jean Stapleton as the Nurse in a production of Romeo and Juliet at the Shakespeare Theatre Company's Lansburgh Theatre in Washington, D.C., which ran from January 25 to March 13. Her Broadway career spanned from 1995 to 1998 across three productions. She played Kuroko and understudied the role of Miranda in The Tempest at the Broadhurst Theatre from November 1 to December 31, 1995. The following year, she portrayed Sandra Markowitz in A Thousand Clowns at the Criterion Center Stage Right, with the run lasting from July 14 to August 10, 1996. She then took on the role of Chrysothemis in Electra at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, a production that ran from December 3, 1998, to March 21, 1999. In 2005, Hinkle performed the title role in Miss Julie on stage, opposite Reg Rogers.

Hinkle began her television career on the soap opera Another World before going on to a series of prominent roles in primetime television. She portrayed Judy Brooks in the ABC drama Once and Again from 1999 to 2002, and subsequently played Judith Harper-Melnick, Alan's neurotic ex-wife, in the CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men alongside Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer, Angus T. Jones, and later Ashton Kutcher. Although she was credited as a regular cast member throughout the series' run from 2003 to 2015, her appearances became infrequent after the eighth season, with only one appearance each in the final three seasons. She also appeared as Samantha Bowers in the NBC drama Deception, alongside Tate Donovan, Victor Garber, and Katherine LaNasa. Her most recent major television role was Rose Weissman in the Amazon Prime Video comedy-drama The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which ran from 2017 to 2023. That performance earned her two consecutive Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, in 2019 and 2020.

Hinkle's film work includes I'm Not Rappaport, Frequency, The Next Big Thing, I Am Sam, and Dark Blue, as well as the 2008 thrillers Quarantine and The Haunting of Molly Hartley. Her television guest appearances include Spin City, Law & Order: SVU, Without a Trace, ER, House, and two separate character appearances on Law & Order.
