About

Marie Booth Russell (1874 – October 31, 1911) was an English-born actress who built her career primarily on the Broadway stage, appearing in a succession of classical and Shakespearean productions between 1904 and 1911. Though described as English, she was born in Brooklyn and received her education at St. Joseph's Academy in Flushing and at Emerson College in Boston.

Russell's Broadway work was closely tied to her marriage to British actor Robert B. Mantell, whom she wed in 1899 as his third wife. The two frequently performed together in Shakespeare dramas, and her stage credits across those years included multiple productions of Othello, Richard III, King Lear, Macbeth, Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice, Julius Caesar, King John, and Romeo and Juliet. She also appeared repeatedly in Richelieu, with productions in 1904, 1905, 1907, 1909, and 1911, as well as in Louis XI in 1909. An earlier credit, The Light of Other Days, dates to 1903.

Beyond her stage work, Russell wrote articles for magazines, was an enthusiastic horsewoman, and publicly supported women's suffrage. In her personal life, she had a daughter, Louisa, born in 1894 from an earlier marriage, and helped raise Mantell's daughter Ethel, born in 1895. Her protégée, American actress Genevieve Hamper, later became Mantell's fourth and final wife.

Russell died on October 31, 1911, at her home in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, at the age of 37, from kidney disease complicated by pneumonia.
